FLOTATION CELLS: CPT provides world’s largest to Salobo project

BRAZILCanadian Process Technologies (CPT) of Vancouver has delivered the world's largest flotation column cells to the Salobo copper project in the national forest of Tapirapé-Aquiri. The deposit, owned by Brazil's Vale, is the largest copper deposit every discovered in the country. Vale is investing US$1.1 billion to prepare the project for production in the first half of 2011.

The 14 columns built by CPT have capacities of almost 400 m³ each. Eight of the cells measure 6.0 metres in diameter and 14.0 metres high. They are equipped with CPT's hydro-dynamic external sparing system using cavitation tube spargers. This type of sparger was selected because of its excellent wear characteristics and ability to generate “pico” bubbles to enhance separation efficiencies resulting in improved metallurgy.

The remaining six columns are 4.3 meters in diameter and 14.0 meters high. They use CPT’s proprietary SlamJet sparging system. SlamJet spargers are regarded as the industry standard because they are low maintenance, easily removed or retro-fitted while the column continues to operate, and automatically “slam shut” if the supply of sparger gas is interrupted. They are designed with a single large-bore orifice to virtually eliminate plugging or fouling.
