ONTARIO - Construction has officially begun on INCO LTD.'s new $120-million oxygen plant in Copper Cliff, near Sudbury. The plant will be operational in March 2006.

The new plant replaces two older plants, built in 1950 and 1967. It will produce 1,500 tonnes of oxygen and 1,700 tonnes of nitrogen daily. It is sized to supply all of Inco's local needs. A third 700-t/d plant, built in 1991, will continue to operate.

The plant being built by PRAXAIR CANADA is energy-efficient, a saving in operating costs. It will be located away from the old plants, which were a source of noise and annoyance for local residents.
