| Main Body | In today’s competitive markets investors and mining companies are increasingly looking to develop opportunities and work in underexplored parts of South America, Asia, and Africa. In these areas, “above ground” risks such as social unrest, civil conflict, or political instability may have historically trumped geological potential when deciding to operate there. As exploration and mining companies devote ever larger budgets to these new frontiers for the industry, it is often the challenges from social and political risks that have the biggest potential impact – often more than the geological and technical considerations. How can managers, investors and technical experts assess social and political risks to their operations in areas new to modern mining? How can the industry protect its people and investments and effectively manage these risks? How can companies approach these risks and how much will it ultimately cost?

Ian Thomson is the co-founder of On Common Ground Consultants, dedicated to advancing management of socially sustainable development globally. His expertise includes stakeholder engagement, social performance guidance, corporate and operational team training, policy and social context reviews, and guiding multi-stakeholder processes.
Daniel Linsker is currently Vice President for Control Risks in South America. Control Risks is an independent, global risk consultancy specialising in helping organisations manage political, integrity and security risks in complex and hostile environments. Daniel specializes in development of bespoke solutions for clients, utilizing Control Risks’ international network of experts.
