Miners Support Pollution Probe
Everyone who produces or uses the gifts of the Earth is invited to celebrate the successes and face the challenges of environmental sustainability. Thus read the invitation to the annual fund-raising event for Pollution Probe in Toronto –the Miner’s Ball–which took place November 6. Speaking as a member of the mining community, Noranda Inc.’s chairman and CEO David Kerr said in a speech at the event: “If we take a proactive approach and establish mechanisms to support new and different sustainable development practices, it will be easier for us to gain and retain access to the metal resources that we and the world need. Our future–the future of the mining and metals industry–is clearly and inextricably linked with the notion of sustainable development.”
Noranda Inc. was the lead sponsor of the event. Other sponsors included Falconbridge, Inco, Barrick Gold, Placer Dome and Suncor. Among the items available at the silent auction was a diamond from the Diavik project, donated by Diavik Diamond Mines Inc., valued at $12,000.
