MOLYBDENUM MINING - Max mine and mill reach commercial production

BRITISH COLUMBIA - The Max molybdenum project near Revelstoke reached commercial production on April 12, 2008. The mine and mill, the province's first new metal mine in a decade, belong to Vancouver's ROCA MINES.

Startup had its share of minor problems such as disruptions due to crusher and mill equipment modifications, process optimization and reagent quality control. All have been overcome, and approximately 410,000 lb of moly in concentrate was produced during this time.

No sooner did Roca Mines say that the Max project was in commercial production than the company announced that Phase Two expansion will begin in May 2008. The second adit has broken through to the mine workings, and by next month mine ventilation will be increased. That will allow for mining rates to increase to 1,000 t/d. A third ball mill is being added to the grinding circuit to double concentrator capacity to at least 1,000 t/d and give it more process flexibility. The new milling rate should be reached by the fall of 2008.

With the Phase Two expansion complete, the monthly production target is to be 600,000 lb of contained molybdenum.
