NUNAVUT – Toronto-based Agnico-Eagle Mines and the Nunavut Department of Education have signed a memorandum of understanding concerning the mining company’s commitment to training the youth of the territory. The aim is to encourage skilled trades and professional careers in mining.

The signatories will work on two programs to encourage students in Kivalliq schools to consider careers in the mining industry. The first is a Mining Matters science course that will start in Grade 3, and the second is a work-shadowing program in trades for high school students at either the Meadowbank gold mine near Baker Lake or the Meliadine gold project at Rankin Inlet.

At the official signing ceremony on April 25, 2012, during the Nunavut Mining Symposium in Iqaluit, the MOU was signed by Nunavut Premier Eva Aariak and Agnico chairman Jim Nasso and VP operations Yvon Sylvestre.

Information about the two gold projects in Nunavut is posted at Agnico-Eagle.com.
