BRITISH COLUMBIA – ALCAN INC. of Montreal is ready to update its Kitimat, B.C., primary aluminum smelter at a cost of approximately US$1.8 billion. The modernization would increase Kitimat’s annual primary aluminum production by more than 60% and make it not only one of Alcan’s largest wholly-owned smelters, but also one of the three largest in North America.
The Kitimat modernization will raise output to 400,000 tonnes/year from the current 245,000 tonnes/year rate. The first phase will come onstream in 2009, and completion of the project is slated for 2011.
The Alcan board has yet to approve the expenditure. Go to www.Alcan.com and sign up for free e-mail notices to be informed when this happens.
