QUEBEC - During a joint ceremony held by Hydro-Quebec and the Quebec Federation of Chambers of Commerce on June 16, 2011, Rio Tinto Alcan, Primary Metal, Quebec was named an Elite Member of the Hydro-Quebec Energy Savers' Circle. The aluminum producer, that has large smelters in the province, was able to cut its yearly power consumption by more than 267 million kWh.

"This is a significant step forward for Rio Tinto Alcan in Quebec. As an industrial user of water resources, we are responsible for achieving the best possible energy efficiency in our operations," said Étienne Jacques, VP Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean. "We are proud of this award, especially since our regional facilities have taken significant measures to curtail their energy consumption."

The Hydro-Quebec Energy Savers' Circle recognizes commercial power consumers for their leadership and outstanding performance in energy efficiency. The Elite level awarded to Rio Tinto Alcan is reserved for members who have met the most stringent energy efficiency conditions, reducing their consumption by at least 6% or 250 million kWh.
