VANCOUVER — The Government of British Columbia is investing $37.5 million in the University of British Columbia (UBC) Earth Systems Science Building. UBC says the investment will position it as a world leader in Earth science innovation thanks to the presence of a state-of-the-art education and research facility.

Total cost of the building is estimated to be $75 million. Construction is to start by summer 2010 and create up to 480 direct jobs. The new 14,570 m2 facility will feature high-tech research and teaching labs. It will also include classrooms, a lecture theatre complex, seminar rooms, quiet study spaces and common areas. It will meet the growing educational needs of 360 major and honours students, 170 graduate students and more than 6,400 undergraduates enrolled in Earth science courses. The facility will also house an expanded Pacific Museum of the Earth, which attracts thousands of visitors and young students every year.
