OTTAWA – The Mining Industry Human Resources Council (MiHR) has reached the memorable milestone of having certified more than 1,000 workers for underground, open pit, mineral processing and diamond drilling trades. Its Canadian Mining Certification Program recently graduated its 1,046th student.

The certification program was designed to improve the skills of Canadian miners and the competitiveness of the industry. It supplements the training efforts of participating companies.

In 2016 three new certifications will be added – frontline supervisor, industry trainer, and hoist operator. These skills are in high demand from mine operators. The addition of these courses is supported by Employment and Social Development Canada's Sectoral Initiatives Program in the form of a three-year, $1.2 million agreement.

In addition to their commitment to skills standardization in mining, employers are looking toward the CMCP for a number of other strategic reasons including competitive advantage, skills gap analysis, and support for responsible mine closure efforts.
