It's already bug season in Northern Ontario – gold bug season that is. The numbers of junior exploration companies eager to drill the region are almost as many as there will be blackflies when the weather warms up. Well … maybe not quite as many, but the winter drilling programs are promising for some.

Toronto's Harte Gold Corp. is examining its Hemlo style Sugar zone property, located 60 km east of the Hemlo camp, between White River and Hornepayne. Having discovered what it calls the "Peacock Boulder" with gold values up to 87 g/t, Harte has mounted surface and airborne surveys. The next step is to conduct an induced polarization and magnetic survey to targets for additional drilling. The Sugar zone gas a 43-101 compliant indicated resource of 1.12 tonnes grading 8.41 g/t and an inferred resource of 417,000 tonnes grading 7.13 g/t. (HarteGold.com)

Lake Shore Gold has identified new, high grade structures near the current mining at the Bell Creek Labine deposit in the Timmins area. The previously untested gap in the North A zone and two hanging wall structures returned 14.12 g/t over 10.2 metres, 8.41 g/t over 12.0 metres, and 7.01 g/t over 10.7 metres. Near the active 685 level mine workings, core assayed 11.42 g/t over 3.6 metres, 8.47 g/t over 4.6 metres, 7.76 g/t over 8.7 metres, 5.96 g/t over 6.5 metres, and 6.38 g/t over 6.0 metres.

The Toronto-based company has revised the deposit model assuming somewhat narrower mining widths but with significantly higher grades for certain zones. The company has to date identified at least seven new hanging wall structures, as well as several examples of intercepts from previously drilled holes crossing these new structures. (LSGold.com)

In the Larder Lake mining division, Toronto's Northern Gold Mining has completed a geotechnical assessment of the Garrcon deposit at its Garrison gold project. The company plans to take a 150,000-tonne bulk sample and have it toll milled later this year. In preparation, two holes were drilled in the sample area, one of which returned 2.40 g/t over 12.0 metres and the other returned 4.10 g/t over 17.0 metres. The deposit has a measured and indicated resource of 1.05 million oz in material grading 1.12 g/t Au. There is also an inferred resource containing 616,000 oz in material grading 2.80 g/t Au. Premier Gold Mines of Thunder Bay, ON, has updated drilling results from its Hardrock deposit, one of four deposits at its Trans-Canada property 200 km east of Thunder Bay. The program includes 60,000 metres of infill drilling and is returning broad, high grade intercepts from what will be an open pit. Separate holes assayed 15.13 g/t across 6.0 metres, 12.40 g/t across 7.0 metres, and 18.54 g/t across 25.5 metres. Broader intercepts assayed 2.90 g/t across 27.3 metres, 1.56 g/t across 35.8 metres, and 1.67 g/t across 29.5 metres in separate holes.

Assays from the North Wall zone north of the primary resource are also encouraging. Hole MM571 tested 1.30 g/t across 57.0 metres and 29.20 g/t across 11.0 metres. Hole MM573 returned 80.57 g/t across 4.5 metres. Hole HR180 assayed 16.73 g/t across 3.0 metres and 2.13 g/t across 15.0 metres.

Premier is also drilling the Bankfield West target 10 km west of the Hardrock deposit. (PremierGoldMines.com)

Certainly there is no shortage of potential gold mines in Northern Ontario. We wish all the explorers good luck as the very long winter comes to an end.
