OTTAWA -- INTERNATIONAL TRADE CANADA has bestowed its prestigious Canada Export Award 2005 for Community Impact to BHP BILLITON DIAMONDS of Yellowknife, NWT. The awards honour Canadians who have made significant contributions to our country's economy.

BHP BILLITON is the operator and 80% owner of the Ekati mine, Canada's first diamond producer. Production began in 1998, and the mine now produces 4% by volume and 7% by value of the world's natural rough diamonds. The company has penetrated international markets because of the stones' quality, the stability of supply and the uniqueness of origin. The company has driven socio-economic prosperity in the territory, creating jobs, business opportunities and skills training while remaining focused on sustainable development.
