CHILE - XSTRATA COPPER, a division of Switzerlands Xstrata PLC, is going forward with the expansion of its Lomas Bayas open pit copper mine 120 km east of Antofagasta. The project will cost US$70 million and increase copper output by 15% to 75,000 tonnes of cathode annually.

The development of the Lomas II pit (formerly known as Fortuna de Cobre), just 3.0 km from the current pit and processing facilities, is now planned to begin in 2010, with operations commencing in 2011. The project will ensure copper production at Lomas Bayas remains at 75,000 t/y through 2020.

The Xstrata website is at www.Xstrata.com.
