WASHINGTON, DC – The International Cyanide Management Institute (ICMI) is looking to made a number of changes to the signatory and certification process used under the international Cyanide Code. The Code covers manufacture, transport and use of cyanide in the production of gold.

The ICMI is proposing to add a "non-compliant" status for those operations that cannot pass the independent audit or found to be non-compliance with the standards. The change will allow those operations to maintain their presence on the Code website while they strive to improve and comply.

The Institute will also for the first time, create criteria for signatory companies and/or operations to rejoin the program after having been terminated or withdrawing voluntarily.

Operations that are temporarily inactive (mines, transportation providers and manufacturers) will now be allowed to remain in the program until operations resume. They would then be certified or recertified.

The ICMI also wants to revise certain parts of the Cyanide Code to improve document organization and clarify existing requirements.

Sixteen of Canada's gold producers – large and small – are signatories to the Cyanide Code.
