FORT A LA CORNE, Saskatchewan Bulk sampling to recover at least 3,000 ct from the Star diamond project is well underway. Owner SHORE GOLD of Saskatoon is in the midst of sinking a 4.5-m shaft and drifting to recover up to 20,000 t of kimberlite.

Cost of the sampling program will be between $5 million and $7.5 million, depending on the size of the sample collected and tested. Shore Gold retained Thyssen Mining to begin shaft-sinking earlier this year. A freeze wall is being established around the shaft to maintain ground competence. Bateman Engineering designed a modular plant to test the bulk sample. It was to be shipped from South Africa and arrive in Saskatchewan last February.
