NORTHWEST TERRITORIES – The Diavik diamond mine near Lac des Gras produced 7.24 million ct of diamonds during calendar year 2014, but according to information provided by Dominion Diamond Corp. output is to fall 7.5% this year to 6.70 million ct.

Dominion is the 40% owner of the Diavik mine, and Rio Tinto owns 60%. A joint venture company, Diavik Diamond Mines Inc., is the operator.

Dominion said that a total of 2.1 million tonnes of kimberlite will be mined this year – 800,000 tonnes from the A-154 North pipe, 400,000 tonnes from A-154 South, and 900,000 tonnes from A-418. Mining will be exclusively underground at these pipes.

A further 300,000 ct will be recovered from the coarse ore rejects. This material is not included in the ore reserve.
