YELLOWKNIFE, NWT — Plan to be in Yellowknife Sept. 8 to 11, 2009, and join the Northern Latitudes Mining Reclamation Workshop at the Explorer Hotel. Strategies for the north, use of traditional knowledge, abandoned mine sites and case studies will be highlighted. A short course on soil covers in the north will be offered, and a field trip to either the Giant and Con gold mines or the Snap Lake diamond mine are also being arranged.

The Workshop is a joint United States/Canada project to facilitate interaction on mine reclamation and remediation in the north. The objective is to bring together representatives of Canadian and U.S. governments, industry members, community leaders, First Nations and Alaska Natives who are involved with mine reclamation or environmental protection to share information and experiences. The emphasis will be on full-scale mitigation, solutions to practical constraints and sustaining successful remediation.

The workshop has been organized by Natural Resources Canada, INAC, the Yukon Territorial Government and the Alaska Department of Natural Resources.

Registration for participants is $400, and for students $200. The short course and field trips are priced separately. Go to www.YCMines.ca and click on the Northern Latitudes logo for complete information.

Interested people may also contact Bill Price (bill.price@NRCan-RNCan.gc.ca) at Natural Resources Canada or Joe Wehrman (joe.wehrman@alaska.gov) at the Alaska Department of Natural Resources.
