 ALBERTA - Newalta Corp. of Calgary has been awarded a $60-million contract to process mature fine tailings from Syncrude's oil sands operation near Fort McMurray. Under terms of the three-year contract, the two companies will work together on a trial process involving the use of cyclones.

Newalta said that operations under the contract will begin on June 1, 2012, and continue on a seasonal basis. Newalta will make a capital investment of $25 million to $30 million in the project. It will design, build and operate a commercial-scale centrifugal demonstration plant to treat the mature fine tails.
