VALENCIA, CALIFORNIA - RIO TINTO has signed a five-year contract naming CATERPILLAR its primary supplier of ancillary mining equipment for Rio's worldwide mining operations. The agreement covers certain classes of haul trucks and support equipment.

Rio Tinto expects to spend more than US$1 billion on heavy equipment from Caterpillar and other suppliers over the next five years. Its contract with Cat focuses on competitive costs to operate and maintain equipment over its life cycle, and it provides for continuous technology and service improvements. The contract will be fulfilled by Cat's Global Mining Division.

Caterpillar had sales and revenues of US$22.76 billion in 2003. The company appears poised to remain a leader in the industry with the introduction of its new 980H wheel loader, Engine Idle Management System and 345CL hydraulic excavator. Go to www.Cat.com for all the specifications and details.
