SANDVIK TAMROCK is committed to customer service and continuous improvement. When asked for a large, automated tunnelling jumbo, its designers and engineers rose to the challenge.

The request came from EBC, which had won a contract from Hydro Quebec for 8.3 km of an 11-m-wide by 13-m-high, 9.8-km-long tunnel north of Baie Comeau, Que. The solution is the Axera T12, a three-boom automated electohydraulic jumbo for openings with cross-sections of 20-180 m. Last summer, EBC put three Axera T12s to work on its portion of the tunnel. Two machines drill almost 24 hours/day working as a team, and the third is on standby. In less than two months after they went to work, the jumbos had completed over 600 m of tunnel.

Guylaine Dubois, EBC's project manager, reports that the Axera T12 can drill off the 13-m-high face in a single pass, whereas tunnels of that height used to be done in two passes. And it is fully automated, making precision cutting the norm.

The Axera T12 brochure and complete technical details are available at www.smc.sandvik.com by clicking on "Products" and following the links to "Tunnelling" and "Axera".
