NEVADA – Recent reports in the Elko Daily Free Press says Barrick Gold has donated new turnout gear for the Spring Creek volunteer firefighters. Each set includes jacket, pants, boots, helmet with lights, and pockets for flashlights and dispatch radios. The 10 new kits have a total price of about US$25,000.

The idea for the gift came from Billy Byington, a Barrick Goldstrike employee and volunteer firefighter for three years. He knew that Barrick frequently supported non-profit organizations near its operations. He also knew that the fire department's current turnout gear was about 10 years old and nearing the end of its useful life.

Katie Neddenriep, Barrick community relations programs manager, was quoted by the local newspaper as saying, “Barrick is pleased to provide this support to the Spring Creek Volunteer Fire Department. They are a vital resource to the communities where our employees and friends work, live and play. We are proud of our employees who volunteer their personal time with this organization and it's an honor to provide access to resources that are so critical to their ongoing safe operation.”

Barrick works hard with local communities whether in North America or far-flung corners of the world. Learn how the company fulfils its social responsibilities at Barrick.com.
