TORONTO – Barrick Gold Corp. has published its latest annual responsibility report providing a detailed look at the company's corporate social responsibility performance. This is the 12th year that Barrick has made its CSR performance public.

In 2013 Barrick contributed US$80.8 million toward the betterment of local communities. A visit to BarrickResponsibility.com  reveals other numbers Barrick wants to highlight – a 16% drop in reportable workplace injuries; 93% of relevant employees took part in human rights training; 100% of relevant employees received code of conduct training; 300 community members at four operations took part in community water monitoring programs.

Barrick's 2013 economic contribution to communities and the countries in which it works totaled US$15.2 billion. The total includes the purchase of local and national goods and services, taxes and royalties paid, and wages and benefits. The company said it spent $7.1 billion to provide economic opportunities, and a further $81.0 million was invested in community development and programs to improve health, education and infrastructure.

In the matter of human rights, Barrick trained more than 12,000 employees in the subject last year. The company continued to work with the Danish Institute of Human Rights supports its Human Rights and Business Country Portal. The partnership with White Ribbon, an organization focused on preventing gender-based violence, particularly in Zambia, Papua New Guinea and Nevada.

Barrick continues to make strides in environmental responsibility. Nearly 25% of its electrical power, both self-generated and purchased, came from renewable sources in 2013. More than 28% of the water used in 2013 was derived from saline or brackish sources, and 67% of the company's operations comply with zero discharge targets.

The efforts are paying off. Barrick was named to the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index for the sixth consecutive year. It also ranks among the top companies as chosen by the NASDAQ Global Sustainability Index. The company has also been named to the Canada 200 Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index.
