NORTHERN IRELAND – The operating and environmental permits are in place for Toronto's Galantas Gold Corp. to develop Ireland's first underground gold mine at the site of the Omagh open pit. The company says hundreds of jobs could be created for the local skilled workforce.

Galantas has spent three years studying the environmental impact of an expanded producer. The underground mine will use the gravity and flotation plant that originally treated open pit ore to make a gold-bearing concentrate from the underground ore. The concentrate is then shipped to a smelter.

Company president and CEO Roland Phelps commented, "This is a significant milestone and a game changer for Galantas. Our open pit gold mine, operated until recently, is the only one in Ireland. It had excellent environmental standards, monitored with detailed studies … and used a safe processing methodology to produce a smelter concentrate."

Construction on the new mine will begin when financing is secured.
