PERU – Peru is striving mightily to formalize the activities of small scale miners in that country with the aim of strengthening their the environmental, safety and fiscal practices. Taking advantage of that support, Montan Mining Corp. of Vancouver is acquiring a 30-t/d gold processing plant already in production.

Goldsmith Resources SAC, a Peruvian company, is selling both the Mollehuaca plant and mining rights for the nearby, operating Eladium gold mine and the Saulito project in the Arequipa region. Total consideration for the mill, mine and project total US$3.3 million. Montan is currently working with its advisors to structure the optimum financing arrangements.

The mill was recently expanded and now boasts both carbon-in-pulp and a flotation facilities with a total capacity of 150 t/d. Unlike others in the region, the mill has the flexibility to treat mixed metal ores. Montan plans to ramp up capacity to 350-t/d to serve as a toll mill for small miners. The Mollehuaca mill is presently permitted for 180 t/d.

When Montan takes over operation and optimization of the mill, the work will be done by experienced local staff under the guidance of Michel Robert, a Montan director and former VP of Pan American Silver. He holds both metallurgical and mining engineering credentials.
