ONTARIO – Production has begun at the Detour Lake gold open pit mine 185 km northeast of Cochrane following three years of construction and expenditures of $1.5 billion. With a project containing 15.6 million oz of gold and an annual production of 675,000 oz, owner Detour Gold of Toronto becomes the owner and operator of one of the largest gold mines in North America.

The company said the first production line started with low grade material on Jan. 12, and the ramp up is progressing. The SAG mill, pebble crusher and ball mill are in operation. The next step is to start the secondary crusher to increase throughput. The first gold pour is expected in mid-February.

Electrical and instrumentation work is progressing on the second production line, and start-up is expected next month.

The last shovel was commissioned in December 2012, bringing the fleet to four shovels and 20 trucks. Mining rates are increasing and should reach the target of 150,000 t/d in a few weeks.

The construction of the Detour Lake mine is documented in the photo gallery at DetourGold.com.
