ONTARIO – Wesdome Gold Mines of Toronto plead guilty to contraventions of the Fisheries act and been fined $175,000 by the Ontario Court of Justice. The company pled guilty to leakage from its Eagle River mine tailings management area near Wawa. The offenses were alleged to take place between Jan. 1, 2012, and May 7, 2013. The pond experienced excessive water levels that allowed effluent containing cyanide and metals to flow into nearby fish bearing water. Not only was Wesdome fined $175,000 for the federal offenses, it was also fined $175,000 related to provincial offenses. Wesdome has recently announced an increase of 112% in contained gold – 170,000 oz in 555,000 tonnes at 9.4 g/t Au – at Eagle River. More information is available at www.Wesdome.com.
