FORT McMURRAY, Alta. SYNCRUDE CANADA is enlarging its fleet with the purchase of six new Caterpillar 797B haul trucks. They will be delivered by FINNING INTERNATIONAL of Vancouver between April and July 2003. The cost of the trucks totals over $30 million.

When the new trucks hit the pit, Syncrude's fleet will number over 30 Cat 797 trucks.

The Cat 797B is the largest truck in the mining industry. It sports a customized body, payload capacity up to 350 tonnes, and weighs 623,690 kg. The Cat 3524B diesel engine has electronic unit injection, electronic control, aftercooled fuel system, and four single-stage turbochargers. The power train includes a new, more efficient torque converter with lockup clutch and seven-speed automatic transmission. The multiple-disc brakes are oil-cooled. The operator station is equipped with all the bells and whistles two full-sized air-suspension seats, easy-to-use controls, storage areas, a cup holder, electric windows, and standard air conditioning. All this in a truck built for quick maintenance and maximum availability.
