NUNAVUT – BAFFINLAND IRON MINES of Toronto plans to begin seeking regulatory approval by the end of this year for its Mary River iron ore mine, 160 km south of Pond Inlet on Baffin Island. With that goal in mind, the company has issued an overview of the detailed project description that will be filed in December.

The overview document, available at www.Baffinland.com, covers the project from construction though open pit mining, rail transportation of crushed ore and ocean shipping. The paper includes information on work schedules, supporting infrastructure and community involvement.

Baffinland has outlined a schedule leading to the first commercial shipment of ore in September 2014. Formal applications for regulatory approval will be filed in August and September 2009. Construction will begin in May 2010, and staged start-up and commissioning will begin in May 2013. The goal is to produce 12.6 million tonnes of direct-shipping ore per year.
