ONTARIO – Northern Iron Corp. of Vancouver has completed the winter dewatering program at the Griffith  mine near Ear Falls, removing 4.0 billion litres of water from the former iron mine. Pumping will resume with the spring thaw with the goal of removing 25 metres of water from the pit.

"Dewatering the pit will allow our drills to get onto the benches in the spring and complete the drill program over the summer," said Basil Botha, Northern Iron president and CEO.

The Griffith discovery was made in 1953 discovery, but it was 1968 before production began. Before closure in 1986, the Griffith mine had produced 22.9 million tonnes of iron ore pellets grading 66.7% Fe from 78.8 million tonnes of crude ore grading 23.9% Fe.

Northern Iron will be exploring the former producer in the hope of reopening it. The extensive monitoring program in place during dewatering has detected no negative effects from the activity.
