QUEBEC – Nemaska Lithium of Quebec city has been granted a positive federal environmental assessment decision for its Whabouchi lithium project 300 km northwest of Chibougamau. The company expects to receive its provincial government certificate of authorization by the end of August 2015.

Last year the Whabouchi feasibility study suggested a pre-production capital requirement of $448 million for the project. The study examined both the mine and mill in northern Quebec and a hydrometallurgical plant to be build near Montreal. At full production the project will have an average annual production rate of 213,000 tonnes of spodumene concentrate that will be converted into 28,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide and 3,250 tonnes of lithium carbonate.

Nemaska's primary market will be the lithium battery sector.
