LONDON, U.K. The INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL ON MINING & METALS (ICMM) has created a new toolkit called "Planning for Integrated Mine Closure", that offers practical guidance for mine closure in a sustainable manner. The toolkit is structured according to the mine life cycle, beginning with conceptual planning and becoming more detailed with each step.

Although closure planning ideally begins early in an operation's life cycle, ICMM says the processes and tools in the toolkit are still valid in situations where this has not been possible. In such cases, more effort must be applied over a shorter length of time.

The ICMM toolkit addresses both the technical and management challenges of mine closure as well as inherent difficulties.
