MINING PEOPLE: APEGBC, Search Minerals, and Teck

The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC has bestowed the C.J. Westerman Memorial Award, its highest honour for geoscientists, to Garth Kirkham. He has been an influential advocate of best practices and improved guidelines in the exploration and mining communities through the support of industry-wide standards such as NI 43-101. Kirkham is president of the CIM and of Kirkham Geosystems.

Greg Andrews, president of Search Minerals in Vancouver, has also been named the company’s CEO. He is a graduate of the University of Calgary.

Teck Resources has named Lawrence Watkins to the post of VP health and safety. He joined the company in 2014 as director of health and safety. Watkins holds a bachelor of environmental science with honours from Murdoch University (Western Australia) and a diploma of occupational health and safety from West Coast Institute of Training.

  1. You mention Garth Kirkham’s award from APEGBC. You neglect to mention Duncan Wyllie’s award, the R.A. McLachlan Memorial Award. Duncan’s work on rockfall (and similar) hazards and rock slope engineering, and his publications in these fields, are widely used in mining development in mountainous terrain.
