MINING PEOPLE IN THE NEWS: Cardero, Goldgroup, Gorman-Rupp and Ivanhoe Mines

Vancouver’s Cardero Resource Corp. has named Angus Christie its COO, effective June 1, 2012. He will be responsible for advancement of the company’s Carbon Creek coal property in the Peace River district of British Columbia.

Chester F. Millar is joining the board of Vancouver-based Goldgroup Mining. He was inducted into the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame in 2008. He discovered and developed the Afton open pit copper-gold mine near Kamloops, BC, and he is associated with several other successful junior companies. Millar holds a degree in geological engineering from the University of British Columbia.

The new general manager of Gorman-Rupp Canada in St. Thomas, ON, is Robert Furneaux. He will succeed Gary Creeden upon his retirement on July 1, 2012. Furneaux began his career with the CIBC and has held various senior management roles with Pella/Hunt, Romaco, Herman Miller, CanWel, Weston Forest and PTM Industries. He holds an honours (BES) degree from University of Waterloo’s Faculty of Environmental Studies.

Ivanhoe Mines of Vancouver has named Kay Priestly its new CEO. She was a senior executive at Rio Tinto and serves on the Ivanhoe board. Chris Baseman is the new CFO.
