First Nickel of Toronto has hired Sean J.F. Samson as its new VP and head of corporate development. He is a veteran of Kinross, and other global ventures, the most recent of which was at Pulse Energy. Samson received an AB from Harvard University and an MBA from Cambridge University.

Montreal-based Malaga Inc. has named Pierre Monet as president and CEO, replacing Jean Martineau who will remain chairman of the company. Previously he was president and before that CFO of Malaga, during which time he was part of the team that restructured Malaga's spin-off from Dynacor Gold Mines.

General (Ret.) Rick Hillier has joined the board of New Millennium Iron of Calgary. He is the former chief of the defense staff of the Canadian Forces.

Bill Williams has been promoted by Orvana Minerals of Toronto to the position of president and CEO following the resignation of Roland Horst from those roles.

Strike Minerals of Toronto has hired Bruce Staines as its VP mine development to focus on the Edwards gold mine project near Wawa, ON.

Calgary's Suncor Energy has announced changes to its senior executive team following news that CEO Rick George will retire at the company's annual meeting in May 2012. Steve Williams, the company's COO since 2007, has been named president immediately and will become CEO up George's retirement. On Jan. 1, 2012, the following appointments will take effect: Eric Axford as executive VP business services; Paul Gardner as senior VP human resources; Mark Little adds in situ operations to his role as executive VP oil sands; Mike MacSween as executive VP major projects; Steve Reynish as executive VP oil sands ventures; and Kris Smith as senior VP supply, trading and corporate development.
