MINING PEOPLE IN THE NEWS: Goldcorp, Kinross, Royal Nickel, and Semafo

Vancouver-based Goldcorp has appointed a new COO, George Burns, who also takes up the mantle as executive VP. He is a veteran of the company’s management team. Burns replaces Steve Reid who is leaving the company.

Kinross Gold of Toronto has named Brant Hinze its president as well as COO. He has a mining engineering degree from the University of Idaho. Other role changes were also made: Geoffrey P. Gold is now executive VP corporate development as well as chief legal officer, and James Crossland has been promoted to executive VP corporate affairs.

Rachel Yang is the new project director for the Dumont nickel project belonging to Royal Nickel Corp. of Toronto. She is a graduate of McGill University with a masters degree in environmental engineering and a bachelors degree in chemical engineering. Her experience includes work on aluminum smelters in Baie-Comeau, QC, and Saudi Arabia, as an independent project advisor, and as a project director at SNC-Lavalin.

Semafo Inc., headquartered in Montreal, has named its former executive VP and COO, Benoit Desormeaux, to the role of president and CEO. He takes over from Benoit La Salle who becomes the company’s executive vice-chairman.
