Vancouver-based TECK COMINCO has named Mike Martin its new general manager of Trail operations effective May 1, 2006. A long-time employee at Trail, he will supervise all of the metallurgical and power facilities at the site.

SHERWOOD COPPER of Vancouver has named two well-known industry leaders, Colin Benner and David Fennell, to its advisory board for the Minto copper-gold project. Benner is also vice-chairman and CEO of EuroZinc Mining Corp. as well as serving on the boards of several mining companies. Fennell is a founder of several gold exploration companies including Ariane Gold, which was acquired by Cambior in 2005.

Wayne Mitchell has joined Toronto's TIOMIN RESOURCES as manager for the Kwale titanium mineral sands project in Kenya. Prior to joining Tiomin, he held senior management positions with Ausenco, Hatch Australia, WMC Resources and RGC Mineral Sands Ltd. In 2004, he successfully managed the procurement and construction of the Tulawaka gold mine in Tanzania on time and under budget.

BAJA MINING CORP. of Vancouver has hired a new director of project development, Eric W. Norton. He is a veteran of Teck Cominco's Trail metallurgical plant, its nickel smelter in Oregon, and was most recently the company's exploration business development group in Vancouver. Norton will head the Baja Mining team investigating the Boleo copper property in Mexico.
