The debate goes on about pollution statistics and the mineral industry. Alicia of cyberspace wrote: "I disagree with Mr. Thuma's arguments for the need to normalize pollution statistics. When it comes to environmental degradation, it is the raw amount of pollutants that are released into our atmosphere that matter. If we were to normalize using one of the examples provided, say profits, does this mean that as long as they make a lot of money, and therefore reduce their emissions per $100,000 of profit it doesn't matter what the volume of toxin they release is? The fact is that we, and the generation to come, need clean air and the finger should be pointed at those companies who are creating the most pollution."
