ONTARIO – The Victoria nickel-copper mine near Sudbury is to be reopened by 2019 – not bad for a property that produced its first ore in 1899. Owner KGHM International made the Zone 4 discovery in 2010. Soon an initial inferred resource estimate of 14.2 million tonnes grading 2.5% Ni, 2.5% Cu, and 7.89 g/t Pt+Pd+Au was outlined.

Planners began thinking about developing and mining the new discovery. Construction of an exploration shaft is scheduled to begin in 2015 and take about two years to complete. That would be followed by two years of development to allow first ore production in 2019. A second shaft is in the planning stage to be sunk from 2019 to 2023 allowing expansion of the project. A mine life of at least 15 years is anticipated.

KGHM plans to have the ore processed at Vale's nearby Clarabelle mill, and Vale will receive a royalty and offtake on all future production.
