CHINA - The newest INCO ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY MATERIALS nickel foam plant, in Dalian, was opened July 11 by The Hon. Jim Peterson, Canada's Minister of International Trade, and Inco officials.

The plant uses "made-in-China" electroplating technology licensed from the Harbin Institute of Technology. It will produce more than 2 million m of foam per year. Inco's total annual foam production is approximately twice that. Inco established its presence in China when it opened an office in Shanghai in 1994; it now employs about 560 people in five different locations in the country.

Nickel foam is used primarily as a component in rechargeable batteries.
