QUEBEC – FedNav has launched a new icebreaker, MV Nunavik, to carry nickel concentrates from the Nunavik mine now under development in the Raglan area of northern Quebec. The project is a joint venture of privately owned Neactic Nickel Mines in Mississauga, ON, and Jien Canada Mining.

The new ship is rated Polar Class 4 and boasts of being the most powerful bulk carrier icebreaker in the world. The Nunavik will operate through the winter without an escort making as many as 3 knots in 1.5-metre-thick ice. The vessel is quipped with the latest environmental technologies including a Tier II engine and the first ballast treatment system installed on a Canadian owned ship. It will sail between Deception Bay and northern Europe.

FedNav is an international ship-owning company headquartered in Montreal. Visit the website at FedNav.com.
