MADAGASCAR – Sherritt International Corp. of Toronto has won the Nedbank Capital Sustainable Business Award in the resources and non-renewable energy category for its biodiversity program at the Ambatovy nickel joint venture. The company and its partners – Korea Resources Corp. (27.5%), Sumitomo Corp. (27.5%), and SNC-Lavalin (5%) – were recognized for excellence in sustainable practices in Africa.

The Ambatovy biodiversity program strives to achieve no net loss and no net harm to biodiversity in Madagascar, one of the most environmentally sensitive regions in the world. Specifically, infrastructure was rerouted to avoid sensitive habitats; impacted plant and wildlife were monitored, rescued and relocated; and a sustainable offset strategy was implemented to protect biodiversity.

"We are honoured to win this prestigious award, which became possible in working with numerous Malagasy and international organizations and scientists," said Sherritt president and CEO, David Pathe. "We knew early on that building Ambatovy would require a visionary approach to biodiversity management and that we could not do this alone. I would like to congratulate everyone at Ambatovy, especially the members of our environment department who work tirelessly to deliver this important program."

The award was made in Johannesburg on Oct. 30. Click here to watch a video overview of the Ambatovy operation.
