NORTHERN ALBERTA - Production at the Muskeg River oil sands mine near Fort McMurray was interrupted by unplanned maintenance on Feb. 24, reported the operator SHELL CANADA of Calgary. Early that day a major tear was discovered in a large conveyor belt that transports ore from the crushers to the bitumen extraction plant.

Partial production was re-established on Feb. 27 using the undamaged portion of the conveyor belt. A new belt is on site, and pre-installation work has begun. A full shutdown of the mine is planned in late-March to install the new belt, a job that is estimated to take two weeks.

More information about the Muskeg River oil sands mine and the proposed expansion is available at www.AlbianSands.com.
