ONTARIO - Northgate Minerals of Vancouver has received approval from the Ontario Ministry of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry for its closure plan for the Young-Davidson underground gold mine. That means construction can begin on the project at Matachewan, 60 km west of Kirkland Lake. Start-up is slated for 2012.

The closure plan sets out the framework for the development, operation and ultimate closure of the project and outlines the plans for rehabilitation of those areas affected by historic and future mining. Construction of the main mill building is scheduled to begin in early August, and it is to be enclosed by the end of the year. Other projects scheduled to begin in the coming months are the deepening of the existing shaft, construction of the tailings impoundment area and the realignment of Highway 566.

Northgate expects to spend US$293 million to open the mine. Proven and probable reserves total 31.1 million tonnes grading approximately 3.0 g/t Au in the underground portion and 1.7 g/t in the pit portion. Reserves contain an estimated 2.8 million oz of gold.
