DENVER HATCH LTD. of Mississauga, Ontario, has been awarded the Project of the Year Award by the PROJECT MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE. Hatch was recognized for its role in the expansion of QUEBEC IRON AND TITANIUM's (QIT) upgraded slag plant in Sorel-Tracey, Quebec.
The award was presented in Denver on Oct. 18, 2008, at the PMI Global Congress 2008 by the Project Management Institute (www.PMI.org) to recognize Hatch's exemplary performance and project management.
QIT commissioned Hatch to add an additional production line to the acid leaching plant and the slag preparation plant in order to meet growing demand. Hatch was responsible for consulting, engineering, developing information systems, and project and construction management. The project was completed eight months ahead of schedule and saved $15 million.
The expansion boosted slag plant production capacity by 15% to more than 375 t/y. The increased capacity will allow treatment of concentrates from an ilmenite project currently under development in Madagascar. The project was the continuation of a QIT investment program of several hundred million dollars designed to reduce cost and improve quality.
