VANCOUVER – Bench scales testing of Medallion Resources’ rare earth extraction process has resulting in the production of calcium phosphate by-product. The company hopes to use monazite to extract rare earths.

Medallion noted that phosphate typically makes up 24% to 29% of the monzonite. Phosphate is liberated during the extraction of rare earths and then converted to calcium phosphate, used globally as a livestock feed supplement. The by-product may provide an additional revenue stream.

Earlier this month, the company announced the results of its bench scale metallurgical tests. These tests indicated that its caustic process approach, fed with by-product monazite sand from a major heavy mineral sands producer, yielded a high purity rare earth concentrate. This concentrate is expected to be suitable for input into standard commercial rare earth refineries or separation plants.
