BRITISH COLUMBIA - The Golden Bear mine belonging to Vancouver-based GOLDCORP has won the Jake MacDonald Mine Reclamation Award, which is presented annually for "outstanding achievement in British Columbia" from the Technical and Research Committee on Reclamation (TRCR). It was presented by the Right Honourable Bill Bennett, Minister of State for Mining.

The Golden Bear mine produced gold from November 1989 to 1994 from underground and again from 1997 to 2001 as a seasonal heap leaching operation.

The TRCR originated in the early 1970s, in response to a demonstrated need in
British Columbia for greater government-industry communications in the area of
environmental protection and reclamation associated with mining. Its photo gallery at www.TRCR.bc.ca is well worth browsing for a reminder of what is possible at old mine sites.
