ALLISTON, Ontario – Provix Inc. and Torsa announced this week that the Total Detector RFID proximity detection and collision avoidance system has been certified by Industry Canada and the FCC for use in both surface and underground mining operations in Canada and the United States.
Proximity detection and collision avoidance are commonly used descriptions for a variety of different systems and technology aimed principally at reducing or eliminating interactions between equipment and personnel in both surface and underground mining. Torsa and its North American partner Provix have developed an RFID-based proximity detection system known as Total Detector, that serves to reduce or eliminate the chance of collisions and to eliminate interactions between operating equipment and personnel.
Unique amongst systems of this type, Total Detector is a peer to peer networked system that requires no infrastructure deployment. Total Detector arms each vehicle, each person and each piece of operating heavy equipment with an RFID tag. Each tag emits a wireless radio signal that specifically identifies the location of the tag and whether it is attached to a person, vehicle, stationary hazard or any type of object or equipment. The tag can be detected at distances up to 500 meters away and this distance is totally configurable to meet operational requirements.
Once the tag is detected, the type and location of the tag is displayed on the LCD monitor in the cab of the moving equipment, while the operator is alerted to the presence by an audible alarm. If required, Total Detector will also display video from a Provix safety camera on screen in order that the operator can see what has been detected in real time.
