YELLOWKNIFE DIAVIK DIAMOND MINES has won the 2003 John T. Ryan Regional Trophy for Select Mines in Western Canada. The award was made by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) at its annual banquet in Edmonton earlier this month. This is the first time a diamond mine has won this award.

The awards, which commemorate John T. Ryan, founder of Mine Safety Appliances Canada, were inaugurated in 1941 as an effort to promote safety in mineral production. The trophies are awarded to the metaliferous mine, the select mine, and the coal mine that in the previous year experienced the lowest reportable injury rates.

Diavik achieved its safety performance by applying stringent standards, educating workers, measuring ongoing performance, reviewing systems and programs, and setting continuous improvement targets. See also www.diavik.ca.
