SUDBURY, Ontario – Northern Centre for Advanced Technology (Norcat) will host the Ontario mine rescue competition at the Onaping training mine on June 6-10. The annual event draws rescue teams, mining companies, and officials and eager spectators. They will witness the skills and expertise of some of the world’s finest mine rescue personnel. The teams will compete in a variety of exercises including proficiency with equipment, firefighting, first aid, and underground emergency scenarios in an operating mine environment. Winners of the provincial competition will advance to the international mine rescue event to be held also in Sudbury on August 19-26. This is the first international competition to be hosted in Canada, and it will be sponsored by Workplace Safety North, Ontario Mine Rescue, Vale, Glencore, KGHM, Goldcorp and Drager. Since 2014, Norcat (www.Norcat.org) has invested nearly $2 million in the Onaping underground training centre where people, technology and innovation can be tested.
