NORTHERN ONTARIO CEMENTATION SKANSKA CANADA has secured the $160-million contract to sink the new shaft at the Nickel Rim South project. The project, located near Sudbury, belongs to FALCONBRIDGE. The contract covers the design and sinking of two shafts over the next five years. An exploration shaft will be 1,785-metres deep, and a ventilation shaft will reach 1,630 metres below surface. Cementation Skanska, headquartered in North Bay, is also working on Falconbridge's Kidd Mine D No.4 shaft and the No.3 shaft at GOLDCORP's Red lake mine.
